Interstate 75 enters Pasco County just south of the State Road 56 interchange and runs north through Wesley Chapel toward San Antonio and Dade City. For the people who live in Meadow Pointe, Wiregrass Ranch, Epperson or Zephyrhills, it is the road to work in Tampa. For the trucking industry, it is the main freight route between the Port of Tampa, central Florida and everything north of Ocala. The two uses share six lanes at 70 miles per hour, and the crashes that result look different from the ones on SR-54.
This post walks the corridor exit by exit, then explains what an interstate claim involves that a surface-street claim does not.
The four Wesley Chapel exits, south to north
The exit numbers below are from the Florida Department of Transportation's I-75 exit list. A fifth Pasco exit, 293 at County Road 41, serves Dade City farther north.
Exit 275, State Road 56. The first Pasco exit north of the I-275 split at exit 274. SR-56 is the road to Tampa Premium Outlets, the Shops at Wiregrass, AdventHealth Wesley Chapel and the Hillsborough line. In May 2022, FDOT opened a diverging diamond interchange here at a cost of $33.6 million, according to WUSF. The design routes SR-56 traffic to the left side of the road through the interchange so that drivers can get on and off I-75 without a left turn across oncoming traffic.
Exit 279, State Road 54. The historic center of Wesley Chapel and the busiest cross-county road in Pasco. SR-54 runs west to Land O' Lakes, US-41 and the Suncoast Parkway and east to Zephyrhills. The interchange is a conventional diamond, and the ramps feed directly into some of the heaviest signalized traffic in the county. Our SR-54 and SR-52 post covers that corridor.
Exit 282, Overpass Road. Until 2023, Overpass Road was just a bridge over I-75. On January 18, 2023, Pasco County and FDOT opened a full diverging diamond interchange here, built for $64.6 million with construction that began in October 2020, according to WUSF. It serves the new communities around Epperson and Watergrass and takes pressure off SR-54. It also put a second unfamiliar interchange design on the same stretch of highway.
Exit 285, State Road 52. The last of the Wesley Chapel-area exits, serving San Antonio, Saint Leo and the west side of Dade City. SR-52 is also a truck route, and the Pasco MPO names it among the corridors where the county's traffic deaths cluster, according to reporting by Laker/Lutz News.
Between these exits the interstate is rural in character, dark at night and fast. Neighborhood News reported in November 2025 that FHP Troop C's public affairs officer, Sgt. Steve Gaskins, noted that interstate lighting is typically installed only near entrance and exit ramps.
The numbers behind the corridor
Neighborhood News, citing the FLHSMV Florida Crash Dashboard, reported that Pasco County had 5,866 crashes between January 1 and November 14, 2025, with 68 fatal crashes and 3,173 injury crashes. The same article named I-75 between Bruce B. Downs Boulevard and Overpass Road, and the interchanges at SR-54, SR-52 and SR-56, among the places where Wesley Chapel's fatal crashes have occurred.
The county's longer trend is worse than the state's. Pasco MPO figures reported by Laker/Lutz News put the 2018 to 2022 average at 102.8 traffic deaths per year, a rate of 1.99 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled against 1.54 for Florida as a whole.

Why an interstate claim is different
The injuries are worse
Speed is the difference. A rear-end crash at 25 miles per hour on SR-54 produces a sprain. The same crash at 70 produces fractures, brain injuries and spinal injuries, and those are the cases where the permanent-injury threshold in Fla. Stat. § 627.737(2) is usually met and pain and suffering is recoverable. Serious I-75 trauma from Wesley Chapel generally goes to the trauma centers in Tampa or to HCA Florida Bayonet Point Hospital in Hudson, not to the nearest ER.
The defendants are often companies
When a tractor-trailer is involved, the claim runs against the motor carrier, sometimes the trailer owner, the shipper or the maintenance contractor. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations govern the driver's hours, the truck's maintenance and the company's insurance. Interstate carriers must keep electronic logging device records and supporting documents for six months under 49 C.F.R. § 395.8, and most must carry at least $750,000 in liability coverage under 49 C.F.R. § 387.9. That is far more than any private driver on the road, and it is why truck cases are handled differently from the first day.
The evidence has a shelf life
Dash cameras, the truck's engine control module, the carrier's dispatch records, FDOT's traffic cameras and the surveillance systems at the truck stops and outlets along SR-56 all record over themselves. A preservation letter sent in the first week is the difference between having that evidence and arguing about what it would have shown.
Multiple drivers mean percentage fights
Chain-reaction crashes are common on I-75. Under Fla. Stat. § 768.81(3), each at-fault party pays only its own percentage, and under § 768.81(6) you recover nothing if your own share exceeds 50 percent. The insurer for every driver has an incentive to push fault onto everyone else, including you. Our comparative-negligence post explains how that plays out.
The other driver may be from anywhere
Interstate crashes involve out-of-state drivers, rental cars and company vehicles with insurers who have never heard of Pasco County. Florida does not require private drivers to carry bodily injury liability coverage, so a driver from Georgia or Ohio may carry more than a local one, or nothing at all. Your own UM/UIM coverage under Fla. Stat. § 627.727 is the backstop. Here is why it matters.
What to do after an I-75 crash in Wesley Chapel
- Get out of the travel lanes if you can, and stay behind the barrier. Secondary crashes on the interstate are common.
- Get treatment within 14 days so your PIP benefits under Fla. Stat. § 627.736 are not lost. AdventHealth Wesley Chapel is at 2600 Bruce B. Downs Boulevard.
- Photograph the truck's DOT number, the trailer's tag and the company name on the door before it leaves.
- Report the crash to your own insurer, briefly, and decline a recorded statement from anyone else.
- Call a lawyer early. Most crash claims must be filed within two years under Fla. Stat. § 95.11(5)(a), but the evidence that wins them is gone in weeks.

Questions people ask us about i-75 crashes in wesley chapel: the interchanges, the trucks, and why an interstate claim is different cases
Who investigates crashes on I-75 in Pasco County?
The Florida Highway Patrol, Troop C, which covers Pasco along with Hillsborough, Pinellas, Hernando and other counties from its headquarters in Tampa. Interstate crashes are almost never worked by the Pasco Sheriff's Office. The FHP report is available through the Florida Crash Portal for $10 plus a $2 transaction fee, and for 60 days it is restricted to the parties, their lawyers and insurers under Fla. Stat. § 316.066(2).
What is a diverging diamond interchange, and does it cause crashes?
At a diverging diamond, traffic on the cross street briefly crosses to the left side of the road so that drivers can enter and exit the interstate without turning across oncoming traffic. Wesley Chapel has two: at SR-56, which opened in May 2022, and at Overpass Road, which opened in January 2023, according to WUSF. FDOT built them to reduce left-turn crashes. They are unfamiliar to many drivers, and crashes there often involve lane confusion or wrong-way entries. Whether the design contributed is a question for the evidence, not an assumption.
How is a truck crash claim on I-75 different from a car crash claim?
The defendant is usually a company, not just a driver, and federal rules apply. Interstate carriers must keep electronic logging device records and supporting documents for six months under 49 C.F.R. § 395.8, maintain inspection and repair records, and carry at least $750,000 in liability coverage for most freight under 49 C.F.R. § 387.9. Those records can prove fatigue, bad maintenance or an overloaded trailer, but only if a preservation demand goes out before they are discarded.
I was in a chain-reaction crash on I-75 with four other cars. Who pays?
Each driver found at fault pays their own percentage. Florida abolished joint and several liability, so under Fla. Stat. § 768.81(3) a judgment is entered against each party only for that party's share. If one of the at-fault drivers has no bodily injury coverage, which Florida does not require, your own UM/UIM coverage under Fla. Stat. § 627.727 fills that share. Sorting out fault among several drivers is where the FHP reconstruction, dash cameras and FDOT traffic cameras matter most.
